What draws me to Knee Knacker? When I considered what little challenge I could take on to mark turning 70, it had to be Knee Knacker. Though I’ve done it four times over the past 14 years, the race hasn’t lost one iota of its appeal. For many trail runners, Knee Knacker is the race to do. To run all the way across the North Shore, mountains and all, is not only a very satisfying physical feat, it’s a unique opportunity to experience the beauty and character of the North Shore. This hits me whenever I look out at the North Shore from Stanley Park or Spanish Banks. Wow, we run all that? It’s not hard to see why people put their name in the hat for Knee Knacker year after year.
My thoughts about being the first 70+ woman? It will be a special thrill to cross the finish line. It isn’t often one has the opportunity to be first at anything, so I’m honoured to be in this position. Having grown up in an era when girls had few options and little encouragement to participate in sports, I love seeing so many women of all ages out on the trails and competing in races. Go ladies!
Advice to newbies? You’ve heard it before, I’m sure. Patience! Stick to a pace that works for you and save something for the end. We’ll soon see if I can heed my own advice.
Many thanks to those who have not only kept Knee Knacker going strong for 27 years but work to make it better every year, Kelsy, Enzo, and so many others. Best wishes to all for a great race on Saturday.
