June 22 trail conditions – Nelson Canyon to Lynn Valley
If you’re running tomorrow’s (June 24) training run, here are two trail condition reports you may want to read.
From Scott, unfiltered and unedited: “we made it to lynn valley in about 6 hours last night. We took our time last portion from grouse to my place because of darkness. (Isn’t it suppose to be the longest days of the year?). Rained off and on pretty much the entire way. Trail good up to the lookout at Black. Didn’t run into snow until we left the lookout. Snow and trail until u get on top of black then pretty much all snow. It’s fairly rotten but we weren’t post holing too often. (Going to get worse for sure). Friggin huge lakes up there, especiaLly yesterday!, going is slow because of the snow but if u take your time its fine. Markers fairly easy to find, although we did get mixes up once as we made our way over to cypress. Descending trail (switchbacks) clear for the most part but still patches of snow into cypress. Cypress to hollyburn trail not bad limited snow, creeks were flowing pretty good. Hit snow (of course) as we ascended to the ski runs, and snow all the way down the cross-country runs until the first warming hut, little break and they snow coverage (although thinner) right down all the way to the start of the Baden Powell trail again. Pretty much the same as a few weeks back but thinner coverage and its going fast with the rain and warmer temps. Ian owes me a beer as he post holded through as we approached the warming hut and hit the dirt, so would advise people to “tread” lightly or it could be worse for them punching through unexpectedly. (Got thing he’s such an athlete, any less of a stud and he could have been injured). All in all Ian was saying he saw parts of the trail he had never seen before because of snow last year, so better but no way is it clear yet. Hope for lots of sun in the next 3 weeks.”
And here’s Mike Helliger‘s assessment: “Just ran this w/e training run today ahead of the rain. Lots of snow on Black mt. Rotten snow, post holing falling thru in spots, not horrible but slow (for me anyways). Pretty good on descent and only patches of snow on connector until you get to Hollyburn, still lots of snow there!”
